Corvallis Knights: 7 Insider Tips For More Fun

Oregon’s warm weather season may be short, and one of the best ways to take advantage is to take a trip and attend a home game of the Corvallis Knights, even if you or your cohorts aren’t baseball enthusiasts. For 17 seasons, the Knights have led the premier summer college wood-bat West Coast League in total wins, making games an amazing way to experience local flavor with a stadium full of enthusiastic fans.

Dan Segel, CEO of the Corvallis Knights, said that while their tagline is "Affordable Family Fun," he sees baseball games as a great place for people to connect since baseball is a slow game, it’s easy to talk to your neighbors, family, and friends - and those can be new friends you make at the stadium. Baseball, he says, brings community together. "You rarely see anyone on their phones, unless it’s to take pictures."

Want to go to Goss Stadium but might have cohorts who may not be able to sit still the whole time or haven’t (yet) become passionate about baseball? The Corvallis Knights love to make baseball accessible to everyone, so here are some top tips to keep your outing fun for all.

  1. Root for the home team! When you arrive, you receive a roster of the players where you can see these collegiates come from all over. In the past, some have gone on to the pros. At this level, the players rotate through the innings, so why not pick one to "adopt" and cheer on when he’s on the field?
  2. Explore the team merchandise: Visit the Knights merchandise stands within the stadium. Even if you're not a fan of the game, you might find items that appeal to you, such as caps, jerseys, or accessories. It can be fun to browse and maybe even find a unique souvenir to take home.
  3. Go beyond “Buy me some peanuts and Cracker Jacks” and treat yourself to other traditional and non-traditional fare. Vegans, vegetarians, and those wanting gluten-free options will find snacks to munch on. The adult beverages give you a taste of local drinks - from local brews, hard ciders, and even baseball-themed wines.
  4. Wander the stadium: Take a walk around the stadium to familiarize yourself with the different sections, food stands, and other attractions. Turn it into a scavenger hunt! See who can find or point out the Hall of Fame room, the home team dugout, the opposing team’s dugout, the Omaha club room, Casey’s Corner, the Press Box, or the many historical plaques.
  5. Enjoy the entertainment: The Knights games often feature entertainment that are fun and engaging. Look for their mascots, Li’l King and Mack The Knight. (Insider note - Li’l King has performed at the stadium for years. His sense of fun and shorter height make the kids feel safe and enjoy his antics even more!) Each game has a guest throwing out the first pitch, kids saying “Play Ball” to start the game, and seventh-inning stretches. Promotions often include games and t-shirt cannons. After the game, kids and adults can go down to the field to meet the players (ask for autographs!), run the bases, or even have their own game of catch.
  6. Socialize: Strike up conversations with other attendees or go to the game with friends. Connect by engaging in discussions, sharing stories, or make new friends.
  7. Capture the moments: People-watching others who are passionate about the game can be entertaining and provide a unique perspective. Bring a camera or use your smartphone to capture the atmosphere, your friends laughing, interesting moments on or off the field, or scenic views of surrounding OSU.
  8. Most importantly, relax and soak in the atmosphere. Corvallis Knights baseball games have a low-stress ambiance and can be an opportunity to simply enjoy being outdoors in a lively, yet safe, environment.
