It's cold out. It's wet out. It gets dark too early. What are we supposed to do for the night?
Don't worry. I have ideas!
Corvallis, Oregon is home to a thriving and talented theater community, as well as several theaters, and they've always got something cool happening.
The Majestic Theatre does several different productions during the month, including comedy nights, improv nights, and the occasional burlesque, as well as plays and concerts. The Whiteside Theatre does a weekly classic movie night, along with hosting concerts and other special events. The Darkside Cinema, a funky little independent theater, is open every night showing arthouse flicks, documentaries, and all kinds of great movies you won't find in a chain theater.
Our schools run fantastic theater departments, too. Oregon State Theatre runs several excellent productions a year, as well as events like the Spring One-Act Festival and Bard in the Quad. And don't ignore our local high school theater, which offers its own awesome productions three times a year, along with occasional professional concerts, dance performances, and more.
If you're looking for something a little more mainstream, we also have an AMC and the Regal, showing all the blockbusters you've been waiting for.
Head downtown for dinner at one of our many restaurants to start the evening off right. Enjoy your show, and consider lingering over your theatre experience with drinks or cocktails afterwards.
Check below for a quick list of our local theaters, and keep an eye on our events calendar for upcoming events, productions and performances.
The Majestic Theatre was built in 1913 as a vaudeville house, and now serves as home to not only Corvallis' excellent community theater productions, but also comedy nights, improv nights, concerts, lectures and more. The Majestic hosts several shows a month, ranging from plays to music to dance, as well as other offerings.
When built in 1922, the Whiteside Theatre was the second grandest movie palace in Oregon at that time. It's survived fires and a multi-year closure beginning in 2002, but the Whiteside Theatre Foundation bought and began restoring the old movie palace to its former glory. The Whiteside shows classic movies every Wednesday and hosts concerts and special events regularly.
The Darkside Cinema is the only independently owned and operated movie theater in Corvallis. They're open every night, playing independent, foreign, and art films you won't find at the megaplexes, as well as offering regular special events, including silent movie nights with live musical accompaniment.
Oregon State University's Theatre Department performs several shows during the school year in a lovely little theatre right on the beautiful Oregon State campus. They also organize and perform in the much-anticipated Bard in the Quad outdoors Shakespeare performances in the Memorial Union quad every year in the late summer.
