Corvallis Arts and Culture

Corvallis, Oregon offers a rich arts and culture experience, vibrant with the work of our local artists and performers.

From ballet to stage productions, live concerts to art shows, and several festivals dedicated to celebrating the arts, Corvallis has a rich artistic experience to offer.

The Arts Center and the Benton County Historical Museum, along with several other local arts galleries, host art shows featuring local and regional artists. The Majestic Theatre offer regular performances varying from live productions to concerts and more. The beautiful and historic Whiteside Theatre hosts concerts and other events. Oregon State University brings an amazing array of arts, performances and concerts to Corvallis, too.

In cooperation with the Corvallis Imagination Music and Art Festival there will be several free play pianos in various locations throughout Corvallis. From August 6th through August 20th you can look forward to free-play pianos in multiple locations throughout Corvallis. Plan to have fun and put music in the air! The Corvallis Imagination Music & Art Festival is running a Kickstarter, and they’ve only got until August 13 to make their goal! All the proceeds from the festival, including its Kickstarter campaign, will be used to submit a grant to the Corvallis Public Schools Foundation for music and art education.

JazzInTheParkThe Hilltop Big Band and Mango Django play Jazz in the Park in Corvallis’ Central Park on Wednesdays all summer long! Bring lawn chairs and blankets.

Mango Django plays Gypsy, Brazilian and standard jazz tunes that will get up on you feet dancing, or at least tapping your toes. Often guest musicians play with the band so each week may be different.

The Hilltop Big Band features the Swing sounds of Basie and others. You’ll find an evening’s worth of music to your liking.

Cool Tools! @ Benton County Museum

Cool Tools! is now open at Benton County Museum in Philomath. Tools of regional and national significance from the workshop, laboratory, farm, field and home are featured. Informational labels are available on touch screen computers or your own smartphone.

Visitors see the surveying tools used by Oregon pioneer Joseph C. Avery (1817-1876) to lay out the town of Marysville (later Corvallis) in 1851, as well as a theodolite used to survey Lake Superior in 1869. This exhibition contains a chain saw that might be the largest you’ve ever seen! The HP35 calculator and the Hewlett-Packard ThinkJet printer had profound effects on American life and we have the objects and share their stories. Tools for agriculture, engineering, robotics, textiles, distilling, lumbering, surveying, and woodworking are all represented. Cool Tools! will be open through 2014 on the ground floor of the museum. Rotating art exhibitions are featured in the second floor Moreland Auditorium.

Fancy Pants is an exhibition of Benton County britches from the museum’s permanent collection. The fashions and fabrics represent both individual taste and societal trends in the home, at work and play. The history behind each pair of trousers provides insight to changes in American gender roles and social norms from 1860-1980.

Selected examples from the exhibition include:

  • Chippewa beaded pants presented to Douglas McKay
  • British-born Fred Merryfield’s World War I Royal Air Force jodhpurs
  • Under bloomers and outer bloomers from the early 20th century
  • Pedal Pushers and culottes from the 1950s and 60s
  • Crazy Quilt bell-bottom jeans from Summit, Oregon, 1971

The Corrine Woodman Gallery presents Corvallis painter Johnny Beaver’s work August 12 through September 3, 2014.

Beaver received art education in Germany, currently studies at Linn-Benton Community College, and has already received his fair share of exhibitions and awards. Beaver represents just one of the many emerging young artists in our area that The Arts Center has and will feature.

The 2014 SAGE Concert Series will take place on July 10th, July 24th, August 7th, and August 21st, from 6pm to 9pm, at the Peffer Amphitheater in Bruce Starker Arts Park. Admission is free, with a suggested donation of $10 per family. The music will be a diverse mix of folk-country-rock-bluegrass-jam, a little something for everyone! Local merchants will be on hand selling food and drinks, and alcohol will be served in the beer garden. Free parking is available on site, and the park is easily accessible by bike via the adjacent bike path.
